Episode 83
This episode was the Christmas podcast. Basically it was both their Top 5 Christmas Wishes, and some apps for education. Barbara's first wish was for school safety. That was really great to hear, especially since it was the week after the Sandyhook tragedy. Next was about teaching students about 21st century communication skills. I think this class does that a lot, and will be very helpful in the future. Third was to get rid of how students are sorted and graded within the classroom. She talked about including more self, peer and performance evaluations and assessments. Then Barbara discussed having students learn at their own pace and making the classroom more engaging for them. And finally being a woman, lots of chocolate. Chris' top five was completely different. First he wanted to get rid of the grade book completely. Next get rid of homework! But more getting rid of deciding when and where the student does the homework. Not every student has the same opportunities at home. Third eliminate due dates and the punishments given with them. Another thing I think students everywhere would love. Next he discussed eliminating the competition that seems to exist in today's classrooms. Nobody wins or loses, but everyone learns together. And lastly he also wanted lots of chocolate. Finally the wrapped up the podcast with questions from Facebook, and I didn't find anything important through that.

I found this podcast interesting to read!
ReplyDeletei like this. its has good methods to it and lots of people are bad at communication.
ReplyDeleteI like the ideas that each person had, but I think that they would be hard to implement in school districts.
ReplyDeleteI think this is useful to give a teacher better input from their students and how their students feel about what is going on in the classroom. This can be used to adjust your lesson plans to better fit each individual and each class.
ReplyDeleteIdealistically I think I relate much more to Chris rather than Barbara. But if I was being realistic, I think that homework and the grade book serve as important factors in education. Homework is assigned so that students are able to go home and practice what they learned. If homework was cut out, the student would really be cheating themselves out of an education. The grade book is SO important and is used as aid to the teacher!
